How to change modes on your Nest thermostat

The Google Nest thermostat and the Nest Learning Thermostat are two of the most popular smart thermostats available for your smart home. Both can help you lower your energy bills while keeping your home cozy and comfortable. But because the products lack the physical buttons found on traditional thermostats, they take a bit of learning to operate.

Struggling to figure out how to turn on the heat with your Nest thermostat? Or is it too hot at home and you need to turn on the air conditioner? Here’s a look at how to change the mode on your Nest thermostat to bring your home back to your preferred temperature.

Consider using heating and cooling mode

Before you start debating how to turn on the heating or air conditioning, it’s worth mentioning the Heat and Cool mode that most Nest thermostats offer. This mode allows the thermostat to automatically turn on either your furnace or air conditioner based on your preferred setting. If your home gets too cold, the heating will turn on. If it gets too hot, the air conditioner will turn on. When the Heat and Cool mode is activated, there is no need to switch to other modes, making it easier than ever to keep your home at a comfortable temperature.

You’ll have to do a little more work upfront (since you’ll need to use the app to program the low and high ranges), but it’s definitely worth the extra effort.

How to change modes on your Nest thermostat

Whether you’re trying to use heating, cooling, or heating and cooling, changing modes on your Nest thermostat always follows the same steps. Here’s a look at how to control your Nest thermostat and change its mode.

Step 1: If you’re using a Nest Thermostat or Nest Learning Thermostat, press the touch bar or ring to open the menu.

Step 2: Next, go to Regime (it can also be called Temperature modedepending on your model).

Step 3: Finally, select the mode you want to use. On the Nest thermostat, this can be done by sliding your finger into a mode and tapping to select it. On the Nest Learning Thermostat, this is done by turning the dial until you select your preferred mode, then pressing the button to confirm your selection.

Step 4: Once you confirm your selection, the thermostat will immediately switch to the new mode. Be sure to dive into the Google Home app to see your preferred temperature ranges for both heating and cooling.

Step 5: If you’re using an older Nest E thermostat, you’ll instead need to press the ring to open the menu, then turn the ring to the mode you want to select. Once you have highlighted your preferred mode, press to confirm your selection.
