The CEO of Nio managed an fully electric ET7 approximately 650 miles (1,044 km) per charge, demonstrating the potential of its semi-solid 150 kWh battery.

William Li teamed up with Nio Power Director Shen Fei and a reporter from Tencent on this trip and they live-streamed every second of it. The trip started in battery interchange station in Shanghai, and after 14 hours, including 12.4 hours of driving, the pair ended their journey near Xiamen in the Longjudong service area. He finished the trip with 3 percent range remaining.

Car News China states that for 92% of the journey, the ET7 was controlled by Nio’s semi-autonomous Navigate-on-Pilot+ system and limited to 90 km/h (56 mph). It averaged just 13.2 kWh/100 km and reached an average speed of 83.9 km/h (52 mph). The test was conducted in cold conditions with temperatures ranging from -2°C to 12°C (28 – 54°F).

The semi-solid battery offered for the ET7 was developed and manufactured by WeLion New Energy Technology and has a single cell energy density of 360 Wh/kg or 260 Wh/kg in the whole package. It’s much more densely packed than the current 100 kWh Nio pack and has the same dimensions, while weighing just 20 kg (44 lb) more.

The manufacturer has not yet started deliveries of ET7 models to customers with 150 kWh batteries and has not confirmed pricing details. Nio president Qin Lihong previously hinted that the package alone will cost the equivalent of the ET5 sedan, or nearly 300,000 yuan (~$42,000).

“Completing this endurance challenge proves the performance of the 150kWh ultra-long battery product,” Li said in a Weibo post after the trip. “More importantly, all models on sale can be flexibly upgraded to 150kWh batteries via the Nio battery exchange system.”
