Honda recalls 106,000 CR-V hybrids for missing fuse that could cause fire

Honda must recall 106,030 CR-Vs built between 2019 and 2022 due to a problem with the design of their 12-volt battery cables. Cables are prone to short circuits and may cause fire.

The issue concerns the 2020-2022 model year CR-V hybrids, whose 12-volt battery cables are routed outside the body frame and have no fuse. This is mostly fine, but if the vehicle has been involved in an accident and the left front fender is damaged in the right way, the battery can be shorted.

This is exactly what happened to the owner on May 17, 2021. After investigating the incident Honda he concluded that the circumstances of the accident were highly unusual and attributed them to what he called the “extreme angle of impact”.

Although Honda and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) determined that a recall campaign was unnecessary at the time, the automaker decided to change the cable design. In June 2022, it added a fuse to new models to prevent short circuits.

A few months later, Honda became aware of a second incident involving the pre-update CR-V hybrid which was involved in an accident and whose 12-volt battery short-circuited. She again determined that the accident was rare, but a few weeks later received a warranty claim about another battery problem and decided to reconsider her conclusion.

He eventually discovered that the potential for such incidents was higher than he had originally thought and decided to launch appeal. The repair should be fairly simple, and Honda technicians will replace owners’ battery cables with an improved part that has a 100A fuse.

The automaker plans to start contacting owners of 2020-2022 CR-V hybrid cars from January 29. She is not aware of any injuries or deaths related to this issue.
