The used Polestar 2 is now an incredibly powerful electric car

On its launch in 2020, Polestar 2 it was a welcome competitor to the Tesla Model 3 with sleek lines and a splash of Scandinavian elegance. Its neoteric design was supported by a powerful drivetrain containing a 78 kilowatt-hour battery and dual 402-horsepower electric motors. Even at launch, the second Polestar (after the expensive limited-edition hybrid sports car) was a solid offering with respectable – if not ground-breaking – range, power, charging speed and driver comfort.

Despite this, the amortization of this electric car designed in Sweden and built in China was not particularly generous. Today, used car shoppers will be delighted to find liftback sedans priced around $30,000.

An Illinois-based dealership is selling the 2021 Polestar 2 Launch Edition with Performance package for $29,476 with 32,000 mi. Compared to its original MSRP of $67,400, the car has depreciated 56.3 percent since going on sale in May 2021, according to Carfax. Another Polestar 2 is available for $32,500, certified pre-owned in Minnesota. It has 11,000 miles on the odometer along with the balance of 54 months bumper to bumper warranty. It hasn’t depreciated that much – “just” 41.5 percent, though it comes with a substantial warranty and low miles.

When considering prices with the new options, many early-build Polestar 2s saw their values ​​halved or more. While it was a disaster for the original owner, someone can now pick up a used Polestar 2 for less than a decently equipped Bolt EUV. For a luxury sedan with impressive performance, its prices are very convincing.

Polestar 2: Specifications and prices

Polestar introduced its 2 sedan as a 2021 model year in Launch Edition form, starting at $61,200. The Launch Edition offered a range of 233 miles, 408 horsepower and a maximum charging speed of 150 kilowatts. It also came with Plus and Pilot packages. The Plus package includes an expansive glass roof, WeaveTech seats, phone function as a key, a heat pump and a 600-watt Harman Kardon sound system. The Pilot package has adaptive cruise control, lane keeping assist and LED fog lights.

For the 2022 and 2023 model years, Polestar introduced a cheaper single-engine variant starting at around $50,000. To the dismay of enthusiasts, the single engine was mounted in the front and produced 231 horsepower. Additionally, Polestar made the Plus and Pilot packages optional, leaving base models pretty dry in terms of creature comforts. Without the packages, the Polestar 2 doesn’t have adaptive cruise control or a heat pump, two features that much cheaper EVs like the Mini Cooper SE have as standard.

2024 Polestar 2 First Drive Review

For the 2024 model year, Polestar introduced a redesigned design and ditched the bland front-wheel drive setup. The new rear-wheel-drive base model has a rear-mounted engine pushing a much more substantial 299 horsepower. In terms of batteries, the RWD variant features a more substantial 82 kilowatt-hour battery with 205 kilowatts of charging power. After all, it can travel 320 miles on a single charge and hit 60 mph in the five-second range, making it a massive upgrade over last year’s base model. The 2024 AWD versions remained at 78 kilowatt-hours, although power rose to 421 horsepower.

For all model years, the Polestar offered the Performance Pack, which hovered around $5,000. The Performance Pack includes 20-inch wheels, gold Brembo brakes, Öhlins shock absorbers and gold seat belts. While the 20-inch wheels are noticeable on the road, the wheel and shock combination makes for a very stiff ride that comes at the expense of ride comfort. The 2024 model year improves everything with a further increase in power to 455 hp and the addition of launch control. Another option available on all Polestar 2s is the $4,000 Nappa upgrade. It ditches the scratchy WeaveTech seats and replaces them with ventilated leather seats.

In short, it’s an interesting car with capable performance, solid range and a good dose of luxury — and it’s something else. Polestar has big plans for electric cars but it is still far from a household name. Expect a lot of questions about this badge when you drive by.

Notes on depreciation

This lack of wider brand awareness has probably not helped Polestar’s long-term value. As a new brand, it is far behind many competitors, including its corporate cousin Volvo.

While many buyers might gravitate towards the XC40 for its more SUV-like proportions, both vehicles offer similar range, performance and charging capabilities. But if you’re comfortable with a slightly smaller cargo space, the Polestar is an obvious choice. Not only is the Polestar cheaper, but its more aerodynamic design (0.278 vs. 0.239 Cd) and optional single-engine setup provide a more useful range. For example, the 2022 Polestar 2 Single Motor can go 270 miles on a single charge, according to the EPA. The Volvo only had a range of 223 miles in the same model year and both used the same battery capacity.

What to look for when buying

In terms of used options, the 2021 and 2022 are the two model years to keep an eye on, as the 2023s are generally in the $40,000 range. Since many 2021 model years come fully loaded, they’re the best choice if you’re looking for an impressive audio system, glass roof, and adaptive cruise control.

While the 2022 Polestars may come with fewer options, there are some advantages to getting the newer one. In terms of reliability, the 2022 model year will likely have more base and battery warranties. When it comes to long-distance driving, the 2022 offered more substantial range. The 2022 model year has 249 miles in AWD and 270 in FWD form.

But the biggest gripe with the 2022 model year is the fact that some examples are missing the Plus and Pilot packages. Cloth seats and no adaptive cruise control don’t sound incredibly exciting, so finding one with the packages is essential. When browsing used versions, it’s important to check the original window sticker to see the list of options. If they are not readily available, you can tell the ones with the Plus package by the glass roof. Offerings equipped with the Pilot package will have a blind spot indicator on the side window. Unfortunately, all Polestar 2 steering wheels display adaptive cruise control icons, even if the car is not so equipped.


One of the leading red flags someone might have with the Polestar 2 is its reliability and fair enough. As Ford Mustang Mach-E and Volkswagen ID.4, the Polestar 2 was only launched for the 2021 model year. It can’t be avoided that there aren’t many data points on the cars to extrapolate substantial information regarding long-term reliability. To reassure potential buyers, the Polestar 2 has a four-year or 50,000-mile basic warranty and an eight-year or 100,000-mile battery warranty.

As many of these used examples are only around two years old, many will only use up half of their basic warranty period. If you’re very wary of a new car, Polestar offers certified pre-owned models. They come with an additional two years of basic warranty which is added to the remaining balance. For relatively new ones, some CPOs may come with more than a four-year warranty.

While the Polestar 2 is by no means a perfect EV, it is an exceptionally good one. And at a low price of around $30,000, it’s an unbeatable bargain on the used car market. It offers more range than the Genesis GV60 Advanced, faster acceleration than the Tesla Model Y Long Range and faster charging than the Mach-E.
