Speaking to the BBC Radio 4 program recently, May acknowledged that the trio had indeed finished filming the latest special “for now” and that this technically made him “unemployed”. Limited details are known about the remaining two episodes of The Grand Tour, but we do know that one of them was filmed in Zimbabwe and will be released next year.

“We have two (episodes The grand tour) in the bag, one coming out very soon and another coming out a bit later, but what happens in between we’ll have to wait and see,” May said.

Interestingly, May believes that now is an excellent time to create a program about cars, but believes that the motor show itself needs a reinvention.

“I think even though it’s obviously coming to the end of our time doing it and we’ve canceled Top Gear, there’s never been a better time (for a motoring programme),” he said. “Things like the future of autonomous cars, new ways of driving cars, changing attitudes towards cars and driving, there’s never been a better time for a motor show. And the car show itself needs a reinvention.”

In November, Amazon’s UK head of unregistered programming, Fozia Khan, admitted that her team was “thinking about how The Grand Tour could live on, possibly with new presenters.

Fortunately, ClarksonHammond and May will not leave our televisions for good. Amazon is preparing for the release of season 3 Clarkson’s Farm and has already ordered a fourth season of the show. Additionally, James May continues as host Our man In… series and Hammond has a show on Discovery+ about his car restoration business.
